What is Subnautica 2?
A new underwater survival world, still built around mystery.
Subnautica 2 is an underwater survival adventure from Unknown Worlds, set on an all-new alien ocean world. It keeps the core loop that made the series memorable: explore deeper water, scan unfamiliar life, collect resources, craft tools, build bases, and move into dangerous biomes without knowing exactly what waits below.
The sequel starts with a new pioneer mission. Alterra offers a new life, the colony ship CICADA carries the mission forward, and then something goes wrong. The ship AI still insists the mission must continue, leaving players to survive, adapt, and uncover why this world matters.
A new alien ocean
Subnautica 2 moves beyond Planet 4546B into a new underwater world built around discovery, risk, and unfamiliar life.
The survival loop returns
Scan new fragments, gather resources, craft tools, build bases, expand your range, and push deeper only when your kit can support it.
Co-op is optional
The biggest sequel change is online co-op, but the core experience is still designed so solo players can begin alone.
Early Access status
Subnautica 2 is playable now, but it is not the finished game.
Subnautica 2 entered Early Access on May 14, 2026. Unknown Worlds describes the launch build as an active-development version with multiplayer, several biomes, some narrative content, a variety of creatures, and craftable items.
If you buy Subnautica 2 during Early Access, the studio says you only need to buy it once. Early buyers receive additions, updates, and hotfixes up to the 1.0 launch and beyond. The practical expectation is simple: the game is live, useful, and already popular, but missing pieces will change across the next updates.
Current Early Access build
- Online multiplayer
- Several biomes
- Some narrative content
- Creatures and craftable items
Planned updates

Multiplayer, co-op, and crossplay
Subnautica 2 Multiplayer, Co-op, and Crossplay
Subnautica 2 is designed as a single-player experience that can optionally be played in online co-op. You can explore alone, or play with up to three friends for a total of four players.
Co-op changes the rhythm of an underwater survival game. One player can scan and document new life, another can gather materials, another can expand the base, and another can navigate deeper routes. That gives groups a reason to coordinate without turning Subnautica 2 into a purely multiplayer game.
Xbox has described the invite flow as supporting Xbox friends and players on other platforms. Because Early Access behavior can change, mixed-platform groups should still check the latest official notes before planning a long session.
Should you play now or wait?
Should You Play Subnautica 2 Now or Wait?
The launch build is a living survival sandbox. It is strongest for players who enjoy discovery, testing systems, and watching a world expand across updates.
Play now if...
- You want to explore the first public build while the world is still undocumented.
- You have a co-op group ready to test scanning, building, navigation, and resource roles.
- You are comfortable with Early Access bugs, balance changes, and incomplete story content.
Wait if...
- You want a complete first playthrough with finished story pacing.
- You prefer stronger performance, fewer crashes, and more polished settings.
- You would rather enter after more biomes, craftables, creatures, and late-game systems are in place.

Known launch issues and driver notes
Subnautica 2 Known Launch Issues and Driver Notes
Launch-week discussion is heavily focused on performance, graphics settings, Linux and Proton questions, VR support, crashes, and resource locations. The most useful homepage answer is to separate official driver notes from community guesses.
- Official Steam notes say GPU and DLSS improvements are planned for hotfixes.
- AMD 9000 series users crashing on AMD driver 26.5.1 are pointed toward rolling back to AMD Adrenalin 26.3.1 while AMD works on a fix.
- NVIDIA driver 576.88 has known crash issues; the official note says Subnautica 2 supports NVIDIA drivers 595.71 and higher.
- If updated drivers do not solve GPU-related issues, try disabling DLSS or lowering settings while hotfixes roll out.
Spoiler-light first dive plan
You do not need a full wiki to start smarter.
- 01
Keep oxygen margins. Turn back before you feel safe, not after the warning starts.
- 02
Scan every new tool, creature, fragment, and base object you can reach safely.
- 03
Build a small functional base before chasing deep exploration.
- 04
Use the Tadpole and upgrades to extend range instead of swimming too far from safety.
- 05
Treat deep biomes and large creatures as progression gates, not sightseeing stops.
- 06
In co-op, split roles: scanner, builder, resource runner, and navigator.
- 07
Keep one storage area for shared materials so the group does not duplicate trips.
- 08
Avoid heavy spoilers early. Look for direction, depth, and gear requirements before reading full route answers.
