What is Subnautica 2?

A new underwater survival world, still built around mystery.

Subnautica 2 is an underwater survival adventure from Unknown Worlds, set on an all-new alien ocean world. It keeps the core loop that made the series memorable: explore deeper water, scan unfamiliar life, collect resources, craft tools, build bases, and move into dangerous biomes without knowing exactly what waits below.

The sequel starts with a new pioneer mission. Alterra offers a new life, the colony ship CICADA carries the mission forward, and then something goes wrong. The ship AI still insists the mission must continue, leaving players to survive, adapt, and uncover why this world matters.

Subnautica 2 entered Early Access on May 14, 2026. Unknown Worlds describes the launch build as an active-development version with multiplayer, several biomes, some narrative content, a variety of creatures, and craftable items.

If you buy Subnautica 2 during Early Access, the studio says you only need to buy it once. Early buyers receive additions, updates, and hotfixes up to the 1.0 launch and beyond. The practical expectation is simple: the game is live, useful, and already popular, but missing pieces will change across the next updates.

Subnautica 2 is designed as a single-player experience that can optionally be played in online co-op. You can explore alone, or play with up to three friends for a total of four players.

Co-op changes the rhythm of an underwater survival game. One player can scan and document new life, another can gather materials, another can expand the base, and another can navigate deeper routes. Official Steam notes say GPU and DLSS improvements are planned for hotfixes.
